Newberry House Montessori School aims to be a leader in the delivery of world-class Montessori-based education from toddlers through Grade 12.

The Newberry Community
One of the goals of a Montessori education is to establish a secure, friendly and caring environment within which to teach students positive and appropriate ways to handle situations.
Our focus therefore lies in assisting our students to develop a strong sense of self-discipline, love of learning, contribution to society, sustainable living, responsibility and courtesy.
We strongly value the relationship between the school and home and view education as a partnership between the School and our families. There are plenty of opportunities for parents to learn more about Montessori education and how to apply it at home through Parent Information evenings, as well as various social events where we get to know one another better.
Our expectation of our students, parents and staff is to demonstrate kindness, courtesy, and respect as a lifestyle that stretches beyond our school borders.
Newberry House Planes of Development
Newberry House is divided into the following age categories (also known as planes of development), from 18 months to 18 years:
Toddler (18 months – 3 years)
Freesia | Jasmine
Pre-Primary (3 – 6 years)
Cosmos | Azalea | Disa | Protea (Afrikaans class)
Elementary (6 – 12 years)
Lower Elementary (6-9 Years): Oak | Willow | Yellowwood
Upper Elementary (9-12 Years): Newton | Breeze
Middle School (12 – 15 years)
Our Middle School follows an authentic Montessori Adolescent Programme, which effectively prepares our students for adult life as well as the academic rigours of the Cambridge curriculum.
High School (15 – 18 years)
Our High School students follow the internationally recognised Cambridge curriculum, where they take a variety of subjects at IGCSE and AS/A-level and leave school with a qualification that allows them to study at most Universities worldwide.
The Newberry House Timeline
2000: Newberry House Montessori Primary starts with two children
2010: A well-established Pre-Primary Montessori School (LAMP) joins us and we move into our new location on the Lourensford Wine Estate
2011: Middle School is launched
2015: We celebrate the opening of our High School
2016: Cambridge International Examination Center and ISASA (Independent Schools Association of Southern Africa) accreditation is achieved
2017: Somerset West Montessori, another highly respected Montessori Pre-Primary school and teacher training centre, under the leadership of Mariana van Niekerk, joins the Newberry House campus and a new Lower Elementary (age 6-9) class opens its doors
2018: Newberry House is one of 6 schools worldwide to participate in a Montessori Sports pilot. Newberry House presents at the Education Sans Frontiers conference, attended by delegates from the world over
2019: Newberry House becomes one of 59 schools worldwide to receive the Platinum Eco Schools award to raise awareness of conservation. We are now working towards Diamond status and hope to achieve this in 2023.
2022: Newberry House expands Middle School to include two wonderful new spaces, allowing us to accommodate more students
2023: A beautifully renovated classroom becomes Yellowwood, our third Lower Elementary environment
Professional Bodies
Newberry House is registered with the Western Cape Education Department and is accredited by ISASA (Independent Schools Association of Southern Africa) as well as SAMA (South African Montessori Association). Newberry House is also an accredited Cambridge Assessment International Education examination centre.
